Prerequisite: HS101, one HS300-level course, and written permission of the instructor. Focuses on the attempts of Americans to control explosive change in the early twentieth-century urbanization, the impacts of industrialization, and the troubling relationship between big business and political institutions in a democracy. Topics include the background and motivations of progressive reformers; their attempts to assimilate or coerce immigrants; and the effect of the progressive consciousness on matters of race, gender, and social class.
