An introduction to engineering as a discipline and profession. Using case studies, readings, discussions, teamwork, design contests, and student portfolios, the processes of design, creative problem solving, and innovation are studied. Emphasis is given to the historical and societal contexts of engineering design and its impact on our society for computer, electrical, materials, and mechanical engineering. Skills necessary for success such as creativity, teamwork, and communication are developed. Introductions to the tools and requirements of the four engineering degree concentrations are provided. Fulfills the second natural science core requirement. Open to majors and non-majors. (Fall/Spring)
